Description
Pele Gives and Takes is a watercolor inspired by the shelf collapse November 2005. Approximately 44 acres of new land fell into the ocean exposing an active lava tube. Creating the "Fire Hose" display. After watching the aerial video on the news I quickly painted this on a 8 x 12 inch piece of paper. Watercolor pencils provided the glowing orange colors. After the pigments dried a tormented face appeared below and a profile view of the Fire Goddess Pele in the upper right hand corner. I have had this made into very large giclees. It really shows well the image I still have in my mind. It only took a couple of days for the land to build up enough to cover the lava tube. I actually only live a few miles from here in Lava Zone 1. I know we have active flowing lava under us. I swim at Ahalanui "the hot pond" State Park. The water can be 95 degrees as it is heated from the lava below. I'm blessed with a lot covered in 400 year old Ohia trees, while a couple of miles away you can walk out to see the new lava flowing on top of the surface.
